This week, Cleveland Water submitted our lead cityside connection map and supporting documentation in accordance with Ohio House Bill 512 (HB512). The bill requires community water systems to identify and map areas known or likely to contain lead service lines. The maps will also assist Ohio EPA with ensuring proper lead and copper sampling is conducted in areas of lead service lines and proper notifications are made to customers.

Recently, risks associated with lead in drinking water have been featured in several local news stories. While some of these reports have responsibly presented the facts, others have taken a more sensational approach, even providing inaccurate and misleading information. As a result, we thought it was a good time to remind all of our customers that the water we deliver to your home is safe, and that it meets and exceeds all Federal and State standards.

Lead was a common material used prior to the 1960s to establish connections between homes and the Cleveland Water System. These connections include a portion on private property for which the property owner is responsible and a portion for which the water system is responsible. In the nearly 70 communities Cleveland Water provides direct service to, the portion maintained by Cleveland Water is referred to as a cityside connection.

Cleveland Water has launched a new search tool for customers. The Lead Connection Lookup provides customers with the ability to determine if their cityside connection is likely or unlikely made of lead. This new search tool is part of our ongoing efforts to educate customers about lead and provide them with information to protect their health and the communities we serve.
