The Cleveland Water system is designed with numerous layers of protection to help ensure only clean, safe drinking water reaches your tap. These advantages start with the location of where we draw water in from Lake Erie, extend to our four treatment plants, and continue throughout our delivery system.

Last week while monitoring sensors on Cleveland Water’s two buoys in Lake Erie, our staff noticed a downwelling event. Water temperature shifts like this can result in adjustments to the treatment process at our plants in order to maintain the quality and consistency of the water coming from your tap.

Did you notice that the water coming out of your tap was a little warmer today than it was a few days ago? You can thank summer and strong winds over Lake Erie for that.

Across the Great Lakes, buoys are going overboard, taking their annual spring plunge back into the water. This week, Cleveland Water’s two buoys will join 14 others stationed in Lake Erie that keep tabs on water quality and meteorological conditions.

Cleveland Water’s treatment process can take anything out of the water to make it safe for you to drink, but it’s easier and cheaper if we don’t have to. The first step in providing affordable, fresh water to your tap is keeping our source water clean.

Delivering safe, quality drinking water to our customers is important. It takes a lot of science and a lot of engineering – from chemistry, biology and freshwater ecology to civil, sanitary and electrical engineering. Understanding laws, regulations, and industry standards are also critical to ensuring the water we provide our customers is safe.

It’s getting close to that time of the year again- the time when we pay tribute to safe, quality drinking water and give thanks to the source that makes it all possible, our beautiful Lake Erie! National Drinking Water Week is May 1-7, 2016, and this year we’ll also take a minute to sing ourselves a Happy Birthday tune for turning the big 160.

In light of recent satellite imagery and model predictions, as well as shoreline detects by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD), Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) continue to make the news in communities across Lake Erie. Despite this news, your Cleveland Water is still safe, quality water that you can enjoy straight from your tap.

Recent news about algae in the Western Basin of Lake Erie has raised some questions about the possibility of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) locally. The overall health and well-being of Lake Erie is a critical piece of the Cleveland Water system. As such, what happens anywhere in the Lake, and with our neighboring systems, is important to us.
