East 71st Water Main Replacement Project Underway

10/11/2016

For the past 30 years, we have invested more than $1.6 billion enhancing our water treatment plants, water tanks and towers, and some water mains. Now, we’re shifting our investment focus to the 5,200 miles of water mains that make up our distribution system in nearly 80 communities. Many of which have served these communities well for more than 60, 70, 80, and in some cases more than 100 years.

Over the next nine years, approximately 50% of our capital spending will be dedicated to replacing aging infrastructure buried underground. This means, between 2015 and 2023, we plan to spend nearly $237 million upgrading our water mains as part of our water main replacement program.

One of the major projects currently underway is our East 71st Street water main replacement project. The purpose of this project is to replace the existing eight inch water main with a new 12” main designed to improve the reliability of water service to the neighborhood and to improve fire protection in the area.

This project will be completed in two phases. Phase I will involve East 71st from Broadway to Harvard and is expected to be complete in 2016. Phase II is expected to be completed in 2017 and will focus on East 71st from Harvard to Grant.

While construction is underway, traffic on East 71st are limited to one-way northbound only. Southbound traffic is diverted along Broadway to Harvard Avenue and then west back to East 71st. For information on the detour routes, click here to view the map.
